Three Worlds

Three Worlds Reviewed by Arthouse Cinema Site Pinnland Empire

Pinnland Empire reviews Amir Motlagh’s latest feature film, Three Worlds. A great review and primer with no spoilers. The film is available now on multiple platforms with many more coming soon. Mirs provided a cut for the soundtrack. Read the film review by clicking here:

Los Angeles is a strange place with its own unique set of rules (much like any popular city). Filmmaker Amir Motlagh taps into this with his latest feature; Three Worlds - a story that mixes semi-personal journal entries with the existential drama found in the works of Terrence Malick or even Shane Curruth (Upstream Color to be specific). This is also an important film about cultural pride and the impact of therapy.....

And putting all Mekas/Malick comparisons aside, this is very much Motlagh’s own film. The movie is filled with obvious autobiographical content that comes off as genuine & organic as opposed to pretentious. That’s not an easy task with a film like this (ambient, sprawling, artistic and sometimes chaotic). A young filmmaker could easily get self-absorbed & pretentious with a movie like Three Worlds but that’s not the case here.

Info about the two films:
MAN (2018) is a vertité-style day-in-the-life story about a computer programmer who lives a secluded existence in L.A.'s Laurel Canyon. His sole real-life companions are his two dogs; everyone else--friends, colleagues, family--he only connects with through technological mediation, via phones and computers. Three Worlds (2018) is a psychological science fiction drama that explores the three lives, or 'worlds,' of a man who undergoes an experiment that triggers haunting memories and alternate life 'memories.'
